The Small Business of the Year Award recognises outstanding businesses with an annual turnover of up to £5 million that have demonstrated exceptional growth, innovation and commitment to their people and their community.
Small businesses are the backbone of the local economy. They create jobs, support local suppliers, invest in communities, and continually adapt to changing market conditions.
The award celebrates organisations that have shown excellence in areas including:

Technology plays a huge role in helping small businesses compete with larger organisations.

Who Can Enter?
To be eligible for the Small Business of the Year Award, businesses must have a turnover of up to £5 million.
Businesses must also meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Be located within Wigan Borough.
- Provide goods or services to businesses or residents within Wigan Borough.
- Employ a significant number of local residents.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting the local economy through sponsorship, charity work or community involvement.
What Are the Judges Looking For?
Applicants will be asked to explain:
- The key factors behind their business growth over the past year.
- How they create a positive workplace culture and retain employees.
- Examples of innovation within the business.
- Their commitment to sustainability, corporate social responsibility or community engagement.
- Their plans for future growth and overcoming upcoming challenges.
Entries are assessed by an independent judging panel made up of experienced business professionals, ensuring a fair and transparent process for every applicant.

- Recognition closes: 10 April 2026
- Applications close: 30 April 2026 at 11:59 pm
- Awards Ceremony: Saturday 26 September 2026
- Venue: The Brick Community Stadium, Loire Drive, Wigan
Entry is completely free, with tickets available for the awards evening for £75 per person, plus any applicable booking fees.
